Popcorn ceiling removal

Popcorn ceilings, gone for good.

That bumpy texture was everywhere in the ’70s and ’80s. Today it dates a room, catches dust and makes every light look harsh. We scrape it off, fix what’s underneath, and leave you a flat, freshly painted ceiling.

New ceilings make old walls look tired.

What actually happens

Six steps, start to finish.

Most of the work is in the prep and the repair. Here’s how a typical job goes.

Test it first

If your home was built before 1990, the texture may contain asbestos. A sample is lab-tested before anyone scrapes. BC safety rules require it, and it protects your family.

Seal the room

Floors, walls and furniture get covered, and doorways and vents are sealed in plastic so the dust stays in one room.

Scrape the texture

The texture is softened and scraped off by hand, carefully, so the drywall underneath isn’t gouged.

Fix what’s underneath

Popcorn often hides tape seams, nail pops and old patches. We repair them and skim the ceiling flat.

Prime and paint

Primer seals the new surface, then a flat ceiling paint goes on so it looks even in any light.

Clean up

The plastic comes down, debris is bagged and hauled away, and the room is ready to use.

FAQ

Popcorn ceiling questions

Something else on your mind? Call 604-722-5351 or email royal4spaintingbc@gmail.com.

It depends on the room size, the ceiling height and how much the drywall needs once the texture comes off. Every estimate is free and in writing, so you know the price before we start.

If it went up before 1990, it might. You can’t tell by looking, so a sample is tested before any work starts. If it comes back positive, we’ll walk you through your options.

You can, but paint won’t hide the texture, and it makes popcorn heavier and harder to remove later. Taking it off gives you a flat ceiling that’s easy to repaint for years.

It’ll be flat and smooth in normal light. Some ceilings were never perfectly level, and slight waves can show when light hits them from the side. We’ll point those out before we start.

Scraping makes a lot of dust and debris. That’s why the room is sealed first and fully cleaned when we’re done.

It depends on how many rooms and how much repair the ceiling needs. Your estimate includes a timeline so you can plan around it.
